He admits he will be at the selection of the spring bride as she will, and she heads back, getting a tongue lashing from Y’shennria for wandering off. He introduces himself as Whisper and Zera immediately pegs him for a noble by his naturally commandeering persona. She confronts him and he is unapologetic. She sees a pick pocket who goes after a wealthy man’s purse and chases him across the city, where she’s sees him do the whole Robin hood thing and give the purse to a poor little girl in desperate need. On the way to the capitol, Zera escapes from Y’shennria for a bit. Her dear husband was killed in the sunless war by heartless and so she hates them, and Zera, but she has agreed to take on the task of introducing Zera has her lost niece in order to help the witches win the war.
Zera agrees and is quickly rushed into her new Patron’s Carriage, the widow Y’shennria. Y’shennria is a believer of the old god and thus is in line with the witches. In return, if Zera succeeds, they will give Zera’s heart back to her, as well as Peligi’s and Crav’s as well, leaving them all to finally be human once again. Zera must rip out his heart, and bring it back to the witches so that he may become one of Nightsinger’s Heartless. They give her the task of seducing Prince Lucien Drevenis d’Malvane, heir of Cavanos, the Higher Reach, and Tollmount Kilstead. When Nightsinger returns, she returns with two others of the witch coven: Seawhisper and Firewalker. Of note, their hearts sit over the fireplace mantel, surrounded by an impenetrable magic. Not mute though never does the hunger mute.
They all eat something of it, which lessens the constant hunger that could easily turn them into monsters. Thus, Nightsinger has left them a dead deer. Heartless toe the line between human and monsters, turning into the vicious latter if they do not consume raw meat on an almost daily basis. Nightsong has 3 heartless to her name total. The more powerful a witch, the more heartless she is able to control. Zera comes home to her two other heartless in arms. Her Master who is in the form of a white crow (as all witches are when not in their “human” form) tells her to go home and eat. However, this one did not know she was heartless, and she lets the creature go free as Zera, being heatless, could easily take it on. One evening, Zera is walking home and is attacked by a Caelon, originally a wild creature that gained sentience and are now used as assassins. They are lethal creatures and need warriors who must obey and protect them from being targeted. Witches serve the old gods who lost in the sun war. Now, Zera is an indentured servant of that witch, Nightsong. A witch stole her heart when she was dying and bound it to her via magic.
